Food Bank of the Southern Tier Responds to Coronavirus Food Issues
The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is closely monitoring the coronavirus situation, especially with reports of people stocking up on food, cleaning supplies and toiletries.
Officials say they know some low-income families can't afford to stock up for several weeks on food and supplies and they are working to ensure partner pantries have the means to distribute food.
The Food Bank says it will continue to need volunteers to help during the developing situation. The need is increased as some volunteers that normally work in the warehouse and in other capacities may be in risk populations like those with current or past health issues or the elderly.
The Food Bank is additionally asking staff and volunteers to stay home if they show any signs of illness. The organization is eliminating volunteers handling open products and all staff and volunteers are required to wash hands and wear gloves before handling food.
Food Bank staff is visually screening volunteers for signs of illness as they arrive each day.
