Flood-Wrecked Homes Torn Down In Vestal
Dozens of houses damaged by the 2011 flood are being demolished in the town of Vestal.
Crews have torn down the first few buildings as part of the initial phase of the project in a neighborhood off Vestal Road.
A total of 58 houses are to be removed over the next few months.
The properties were acquired as part of a buyout program administered by the town and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Once the sites have been cleared, no new homes will be permitted on them.
Under federal guidelines, the properties will be turned into green space. They may be utilized for certain limited purposes.
All of the houses in the buyout program are expected to be demolished by the end of April.
