A head-on crash on Route 79 in the town of Richford left five people dead and two others hospitalized with serious injuries.

Authorities say the collision involving a sport utility vehicle and a pickup truck happened near the Broome-Tioga county line around 5:20 p.m. Sunday.

According to the Tioga County Sheriff's Office, a 2018 Honda Pilot was eastbound on Route 79 when it passed a vehicle and slammed into a 2008 Toyota Tacoma.

Investigators say three of the five people who were in the Pilot were pronounced dead at the scene, as were the two occupants of the Tacoma.

One person who had been in the Pilot was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City  and was reported in critical condition.

Another occupant of the Pilot was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and was listed in stable condition.

No names or other details of the crash were released by the sheriff's office.
