Several female journalists who have worked for Spectrum News have filed an age and gender discrimination lawsuit against the owners of the cable operation.

According to The New York Times, five women claim there has been an effort at Spectrum News NY1 to force them off the air in favor of younger employees who have less experience.

The operation was rebranded "Spectrum News" after Charter Communications acquired Time Warner Cable in 2016.

The women filing the suit contend the company has reduced their airtime and anchoring slots. They also maintain they've been excluded from the news channel's promotional campaigns.

In a statement, a Charter spokeswoman said: "We take these allegations seriously and as we complete our thorough review, we have not found any merit to them."

The women taking the action against the company range in age from 40 to 61. They maintain that men and younger women have received more opportunities under Charter Communications ownership.
