Fire Destroys South Montrose Church
Fire has destroyed the South Montrose Community Church on Route 29 according to the United Fire Company.
Officials have posted on the company facebook page August 13 that State Route 29 has reopened but crews were on the scene for five hours battling the two-alarm fire.
The fire in the steeple and open attic area was reported at around 10:40 p.m. August 12.
According to the post, the United Fire Company was joined battling the blaze by firefighters from Susquehanna, Wyoming and Bradford Counties. Firefighters reportedly tried to push into the structure but were driven back due to the rapidly deteriorating conditions.
United Fire says “unfortunately the church suffered catastrophic damage.”
There have been no reports regarding injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
