Fire Danger Ramps Up Again in Southern Tier

The National Weather Service is warning of increased fire danger again for the next couple of days.

The Broome County Fire Wire over the weekend reported a few more brush fires around the region and NOAA says the fire danger increases again for the afternoon April 5 as winds gust to around 20 to 25 mph and relative humidity falls to 20 to 30 percent.

The combination of warm temperatures, gusty winds, and low humidity will make for favorable conditions for fire ignition and fire spread into the evening.

On April 6, relative humidity is expected to be even lower, at around 15 to 25 percent, although winds will not be as gusty. Peak gusts Tuesday are expected to be around 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon.

In addition to refraining from burning brush, which is banned under state law through May 14, residents are advised to caution if handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches.
