Fire Damages Maine Emergency Squad & Neighboring Businesses
No injuries are reported after numerous fire crews responded to a blaze at the Maine Emergency Squad headquarters in a plaza at 2658 Main Street in the Town of Maine shortly before 12:30 a.m. May 5.
According to Broome County Emergency Services officials, the blaze in the ambulance squad was reported at 12:28 a.m. and drew firefighters from Maine, Union Center, Endwell, Newark Valley, Endicott and other companies as well as fire investigators.
The second alarm was quickly cancelled as the fire was knocked down but smoke damage to the Dollar General store next door may keep that business closed Wednesday.
Authorities said they believed code rules dictate that the business has to be inspected by health officials since there is food in the store.
The aging ambulance squad facility suffered damage to the roof from heavy snow over the winter.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
