A downtown Binghamton building that was the site of an apparent arson fire likely will be demolished.

Mayor Richard David said city officials are working with the owner of the vacant apartment house at 38 Columbus Park East.

The front portion of the three-story, six-unit structure sustained heavy damage in a blaze early last Thursday morning.

Authorities had said there were indications people had been staying at the building without permission. Police have made no arrests in connection with the fire.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, the mayor said efforts are underway to determine whether insurance proceeds will be available to cover the cost of tearing down the structure.

David said the city doesn't want fire-damaged buildings "lingering for long periods of time." He said steps will be taken to "expedite the demolition" of the structure where last week's fire occurred.

Broome County property records indicate the property was purchased for $20,000 by a Brooklyn man in 2006.
