5 Injured in Pa. Metal Coating Plant Blast

Officials in Northeast Pennsylvania along with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating an explosion April 21 at a Bradford County factory that sent five people to the hospital.

Various media reports, including the Rocket Courier and WNEP Television, report the 9:15 a.m. blast at Global Tungsten & Powders Corporation in Towanda sent five people, four of them employees and one contractor to Guthrie Hospitals in Towanda and Sayre. All of those injured have reportedly since been released.

OSHA is looking into what caused the blast at the world headquarters for the company that manufactures metal powders including tungsten, tungsten carbide and cobalt internationally.

WNEP quoted Bradford County Emergency Services officials as saying a hydrogen tank exploded inside the plant on Hawes Street.

The company issued a statement during the day saying the area had been secured and there were no additional risks of explosions or similar concerns.
