Endicott Woman Seriously Hurt in Two-Alarm Blaze

An Endicott woman sustained smoke inhalation and burns as the result of a two-alarm fire in her residence.

The blaze in an apartment complex at 427 East Main Street was reported just after 7:30 Tuesday morning.

Authorities say the fire started as a result of the woman smoking while using oxygen. Initial reports indicated she was critically injured. She was taken by ambulance to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Endicott firefighters were assisted by units from several other departments, including Vestal, Union Center and West Corners. The blaze was brought under control in less than 20 minutes.

Firefighting operations snarled traffic on East Main Street for about two hours. Broome County sheriff's deputies and the state Department of Transportation helped Endicott police direct drivers around the scene.

The American Red Cross was called to assistant apartment complex residents who were displaced by the fire.
