Endicott Rescinds Zoning Change, Blocks Battery Recycling Plans
After over a year of discussion, demonstration and petitions, Endicott is backing away from allowing a lithium-ion battery recycling plant to operate in the Village.
A public hearing on the zoning regulations that would allow SungEel to operate the plant on former IBM property was held on February 1, followed by the board voting to rescind the legislation that had cleared the way for the development. Three trustees voted to rescind with one abstention and no votes opposed.
Village Mayor Linda Jackson, who has been a strong supporter of the developer, released a statement expressing her disappointment with the move, saying Endicott is looking unfriendly and unwelcoming to new business. Plans for a glass recycling facility in Endicott also recently fell through.
