Endicott Natural Gas Fuel Cell Construction Begins
Work has started on a fuel cell system that will provide more electricity to the Huron Campus in Endicott.
Construction on the eight-megawatt facility began Wednesday in what now is a parking lot between Watson Boulevard and Clark Street. The site is located next to a NYSEG substation west of Hayes Avenue.
Chris Pelto, who oversees the Huron Campus property for Phoenix Investors, said the natural gas fuel cell system would cover an area of about 150 feet by 150 feet.
Pelto told WNBF News there's a need for more power for future tenants at the Huron complex. He said the fuel cell system will supplement the power now provided by the existing NYSEG Clark Street substation.
The system is being developed by Bloom Energy of California. Keeley Construction is doing the work at the Endicott site.
Pelto said he expects the fuel cell system could be operational by April or May.
Five large buildings that had been used by IBM for several decades were demolished last year to create space for future development at the Huron Campus.
Huron representatives have been having discussions with potential tenants in recent months.
