The Endicott police department bomb squad assisted agencies in Chenango County after a suspicious-looking pipe was spotted in Sherburne.

Some people who live near the intersection of North Main Street and West State Street were evacuated Thursday evening after the item was reported on a sidewalk near a building.

Endicott police lieutenant Charles Smales says the bomb unit was in Sherburne for a few hours.

The squad assisted Sherburne village police and the Chenango County sheriff's office in ascertaining the pipe was empty.

Those who were evacuated were able to return to their homes at about 12:15 this morning.
