Workers are expected to start preparations ahead of a project to tear down a long abandoned Binghamton building that provided ice to the region for decades.

Mayor Richard David had announced the Magic City Ice Company building on Front Street would be demolished last month.

David said the work was delayed but it's now about to get underway.

According to a sign posted on the crumbling structure, asbestos removal is scheduled to start May 12.

All Around Excavating has been hired to remove the building, which has been viewed by city officials and residents as an eyesore.

The building was expected to be torn down last year but it didn't happen according to the city's original plan.

After the structure is removed, work on the Front Street Gateway Project is to begin.

City officials have not said exactly what will be done with the cleared ice house site.
