Delaware County Sheriff Fires “Intoxicated” Deputy
A Delaware County sheriff's deputy who allegedly showed up for work in an intoxicated condition has been terminated.
25-year-old Anthony Shields of Colchester was arrested by sheriff's deputies last Thursday. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated and officials misconduct.
Shields graduated from a police academy last month. He had worked for the sheriff's office as a corrections officer since 2017.
Shields has been ordered to appear in Delhi town court on January 26.
Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond said he was "extremely disappointed and exasperated" by the deputy's conduct. He said "his actions discredited himself, his peers and the honor of the sheriff's office."
DuMond said the immediate termination of Shields should "demonstrate to the public that no one is above the law."
