New York state is preparing to adopt the federal government's latest mask and social distancing guidelines for people who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said the masking requirement will be dropped on Wednesday in most settings for those who have received the vaccine.

Cuomo said masks will continue to be required on public transit, in schools and in some communal settings. He said private venues also may require masks.

Walmart and several other retail chains have announced they won't require customers to wear masks. But some other companies, including Target, have said they intend to maintain the mask requirement.

New York's masking rules went into effect in April 2020.
