Officials with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation say two cows that shut down lanes on Interstate 81 for over an hour Thursday, February 25, apparently “fell off the back of a truck.”

One bovine was found in the median of I81 near Gibson at around 8:30 a.m. while another was found in the median about 25 miles away near Clark Summit.

Farmers in those areas were contacted to corral the cows until the owner was located. Pennsylvania State Police say the animals belonged to someone in Union County in Central Pennsylvania.

A PennDOT spokesman said, while the cows suffered injuries to their legs and backs they “were in better shape than you would expect for falling off a vehicle going 55 miles an hour.”

The final fate of the wayward cows is unknown.
