Code Blue Shelters and Free Bus Rides in Broome
Dangerously cold wind chills are gripping the region prompting the Broome County Department of Social Services to activate its Code Blue Plan to get homeless people into safe shelters.
Emergency shelter facilities opened January 30 at the YWCA and YMCA in Binghamton as well as the Volunteers of America in Binghamton and law enforcement officials could help get people to the shelter with worries about how to pay.
Anyone in need of shelter can go to those locations in Binghamton to get out of the cold and the shelters have said they have the ability to expand capacity if needed.
Local law enforcement may be able to assist in getting people to shelter.
Also, due to the extreme conditions, Broome County’s BC Transit buses will not turn away any rider due to inability to pay January 31. If a person needs a ride to somewhere warm or just to get out of the cold, Broome County will cover the cost.
