Cause of Fire That Destroyed Great Bend Auto Shop Unknown
Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a popular local auto service shop.
Dozens of firefighters from Susquehanna and Broome Counties were called to the scene of the four-alarm fire in Susquehanna County, just south of the New York State border at 9:23 a.m. May 12.
The blaze at Marv's Auto Service Center on Route 11 between Orchard Avenue and the New York State line in Great Bend could be seen for miles and slowed traffic on Interstate 81 as motorists reacted to the sight of smoke and flames shooting into the air next to the highway as the building quickly became fully engulfed.
Several fire departments traveled to a nearby boat launch site on the Susquehanna River several times to refill water tankers as they battled the blaze for hours.
Route 11 finally reopened to traffic at around 2 p.m. according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
There were no reports of injuries.
One worker was said to be in one of the buildings when the fire broke out. Several vehicles were destroyed along with the business.
