Car Travels Otsiningo Park Walking Path, Strikes Tree and Van

The tranquility at Broome County's Otsiningo Park was shattered when an apparently disoriented man drove a car onto a walking path before hitting a tree and a parked vehicle.

The trouble developed around 12:20 p.m. Friday when a 2004 Honda Accord crashed into a trash can near the entrance of the park in the town of Dickinson.

The vehicle then proceeded to travel on a walkway as bewildered pedestrians scrambled to get out of the way.

Authorities say the car then struck a tree before eventually coming to a halt after it smashed into a parked 2020 Ford Transit passenger van. The driver's side airbag in the Honda deployed as the result of the crash.

Witnesses said the driver appeared to be "out of it" following the incident. Medics from the Broome Volunteer Emergency Squad evaluated the man, who was described as in his 30s and a resident of Binghamton's West Side.

There was no immediate indication of alcohol or drug involvement. The driver did not appear to have been injured.

The van that was damaged is owned by Community Options, which provides support to people with disabilities.

The people who had traveled to the park in the van were sitting a few feet away at a picnic table when it was struck. Although they were frightened by the crash, they were not hurt.
