The Candlewood Suites hotel in Vestal has opened, becoming the second big hotel to start operations in Broome County in the last few weeks.

The new four-story hotel on the Vestal Parkway opened last Thursday. That was exactly one month after the Microtel Inn and Suites opened on Prospect Street in the Town of Dickinson.

Candlewood general manager Anna Summers said there are about 10 people on the hotel's staff. She said many guests will be staying in the area in connection with the nearby Binghamton University or for government-related business with local contractors.

The site of the Candlewood previously was home to the Plaza Diner. Summers said the hotel has 81 suites. Construction for the 48,000-square-foot building started last summer.

The hotel opened a few weeks later than original scheduled because of delays in deliveries of furniture and equipment.

A developer has been working to finalize plans for another hotel on the other side of the Vestal Parkway, just west of the new Candlewood. That project has been proposed for the site of the old Joseph Coury furniture store.
