Dozens of volunteers are planning to gather in Tioga County to harvest potatoes for use by food pantries in the region.

Members of the Southern Tier Antique Tractor Club have been donating potatoes for those in need for more than a decade.

Club spokesman Jim Baker said this year's harvesting is scheduled to start Saturday morning. He said people interested in helping out are invited to show up at the field across from Jackson's Pumpkin Farm on Route 17C.

Baker said the organization expects to harvest up to 50,000 pounds of potatoes this year. The effort has grown significantly since 2008 when the club donated 750 pounds of potatoes.

Volunteers of all ages are expected to help with the potato harvest on Saturday. Students from the Catholic Schools of Broome County and some other area schools are planning to assist in the effort.
