Buildings at Key Binghamton Intersection Getting Makeover

Several properties near a busy Main Street intersection in Binghamton are getting a facelift.

A contractor has been busy with renovation projects on buildings east of Front Street.

Michael Tokos, owner of Tokos Contracting, said he's been working for property owner Liam Burns to remodel the buildings.

The renovation work is being supported with funding from the state and the Binghamton Local Development Corporation.

One project is at 11 Main Street where Peterson's Tavern, now situated on the first floor, will expand to the second floor. Tokos said plans call for another bar and lounge area.

Two two-bedroom apartments will be located on the building's third floor.

A building located at 4 Main Street - on the west bank of the Chenango River - is expected to be the home of a new restaurant.

Façade work is planned for the building next door 8 Main. An original storefront-look is to be restored on the first floor. There already are apartments on the second and third floors.

Tokos said at some point in the future, a long-vacant building on the southwest corner of Main and Front could be restored to retail use.

The site had been home to Walter's Shoe Store for decades until the business closed in 2003.

Liam Burns could not be reached to discuss the transformational plans for the properties near the Main and Front intersection.
