Broome County’s Public Health Director says she’s very concerned that people will see the pause on administering the one-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine a reason not to get vaccinated at all.

Federal officials recommended a pause on the J&J shots after six women developed blood clots in their brains days after receiving the shot. One woman has died and another is in critical condition.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration recommended the pause even though the incidents were very rare: six women between the ages of 18 and 48 with the complication out of 6.8 million doses given.

Broome and other counties are substituting the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and keeping appointments for anyone who had scheduled a J&J shot when the pause was announced April 13. Other clinics are on hold.

Broome County still has plenty of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine available in upcoming clinics in spite of replacing J&J shots with the Pfizer-BioNTech product.

As of 6 a.m. April 14, there were 670 appointments open at the SUNY Broome Ice Center P.O.D. for April 15, April 16, Monday, April 19 and Tuesday, April 20. Go to www.gobroomecounty.com to schedule an appointment.
