Broome Residents Confused by Scranton “House of Sport” Mailing
With the opening of Dick's Sporting Goods massive new-format Johnson City store just days away, some people in the Binghamton area have been surprised to receive a glossy ad promoting a "House of Sport" in Scranton.
The mailing highlights the August 11 grand opening of the Dick's Sporting Goods location in the Viewmont Mall. The multi-page mailer features a "$10 Off" coupon valid only at the Scranton store.
Some Broome and Tioga county residents who got the advertisement in their mail wondered if they received it in error. They expected to receive something highlighting the planned opening of the 140,000-square-foot store at the Oakdale Commons in Johnson City.
A spokesperson for Dick's Sporting Goods told WNBF News in an email that "some residents may receive promotional materials for both stores, based on the distance of their mailing address from each store."
People in the Binghamton area can expect to receive mailers highlighting the Johnson City store in the next few days.
The spokesperson added that the overlap of the grand opening ads "was intentional and based solely on the distance specified for the mailers."
If you receive a mailer for each store, pay attention to the location on any coupon you intend to use. The coupon should be used only at the store specified in the mailer.
The Johnson City store is being billed as the largest "House of Sport" location opened by the chain that got its start on Binghamton's East Side in 1948.
The company opened its first store using the "House of Sport" format near Rochester in April 2021. This year, a total of nine "House of Sport" stores are being opened.
