New York State Corrections officials are looking into the death of a Broome County Jail inmate who passed away while in custody September 30.

Authorities say 34 year old Kevin Carroll was taken to the hospital September 27. County officials have said the cause of Carroll’s death is unknown.

The State Commission of Correction is not commenting on the investigation.

Carroll had been arrested in connection with a shooting on the North Side of Binghamton in October 2014.

He was charged with felony attempted murder and scheduled to go on trial in January.

Carroll is the second inmate in Broome to die while in custody in under two years.

35 year old Salladin Barton died in his cell in January 2015 and his family filed a federal lawsuit against the Sheriff’s Office and Correctional Medical Care Incorporated for allegedly not proving proper care for the man.

That case is still in federal court.
