Investigations have been launched into the death of a woman who was incarcerated at the Broome County Jail in the town of Dickinson.

Authorities announced Thursday afternoon that 38-year-old Chelsey M. Davis of Port Dickinson was pronounced dead several hours after she arrived at the facility on Front Street.

Sheriff Fred Akshar said Davis had been taken into custody by deputies with the department's warrant division early Wednesday afternoon. She had been remanded to the jail by Chenango town court on a criminal contempt charge.

The sheriff said Davis underwent a medical and substance abuse screening as part of the jail's booking process. Based on the screening, she placed in the medical unit for observation and monitoring.

Akshar said the jail's medical staff conducted two additional evaluations of Davis over the next few hours.

According to the sheriff, the jail staff observed the woman "experiencing a medical emergency." They performed CPR and used an AED.

A Superior ambulance arrived at the jail a short time later. Medics were unable to revive Davis. She was pronounced dead at the scene by an EMT in consultation by phone with a UHS physician.

Akshar said an autopsy was performed Thursday but the results - including a toxicology report - may not be available for months.

The sheriff said the jail is conducting a full investigation into the inmate's death. He said his department is cooperating with the state attorney general's office and the New York State Commission on Corrections.

Akshar extended condolences to the woman's family. He said he would not "speculate about what may have happened" that resulted in her death.
