Broome County is getting $2,040,000 to buy three new hybrid electric buses and otherwise upgrade the public transit fleet.

U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York have announced the funding from the Department of Transportation Bus and Bus Facilities Program for the buying of the hybrids and replacing older BC Transit diesel buses.

The Democrats point to public transportation as a link in the local economy and a way for residents to access jobs, shopping and services like medical appointments.

The purchase of the new hybrid buses is also seen as a way to save the county money while helping the environment.
