A 30-year-old man was arrested by Broome County sheriff's deputies after he allegedly broke a chair over his mother's back while he was under the influence of drugs.

Authorities say Matthew Baxter of Harpursville has been charged with first-degree assault, in connection with the attack which is said to have happened early Saturday.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies were called shortly after midnight to investigate a domestic dispute on Welton Street in the town of Colesville.

Investigators say Baxter's mother sustained serious injury in the incident. The woman's name was not released. The nature of her injuries was not released and there was no information about whether she was hospitalized.
