Broome County Legislature Votes on New District Map
Under accusations of messing with district lines to favor the election of Republicans, the Broome County Legislature January 13 is expected to vote on the newly redrawn legislative maps.
The district lines are supposed to reflect population makeup as reported in the latest census but Democrats on the Ad Hoc committee that worked on the project and in the county legislature, accuse the final proposal, Draft Map 3, which splits the Town of Maine between three districts, is the product of Gerrymandering.
Earlier this month, the committee, made up of Republicans, Democrats, community and business leaders and members of the public, voted six to three in favor of Draft Map #3.
Legislator Mark Whalen, who was a member of the committee, says the map will be used for voting in the next election but a legal challenge is planned in State Supreme Court.
A public information session precedes this afternoon’s vote.
