Volunteer Shortage Closes Brisben, New York Fire Department
In an unfortunate turn of events, the Brisben Fire Department has disbanded.
The department, which served an area located between the towns of Greene and Oxford with about 400 homes, closed its doors last week despite a valiant effort to keep them open.
The Brisben Fire Department averaged between 140 and 150 fire calls annually, in addition to 160 EMS calls. The department had five trucks, two engines, a brush truck, a tanker, and a medical response Jeep, and just five members, which is the reason that they were forced to close. The department was unable to find new volunteers. Chief Jason Boise told the Daily Star that it would take 10 to 15 new members to keep the department operational.
The department attempted to bring in new members, using digital and physical signs, as well as mailing letters to residents however the department received only one application during its quest for new volunteers.
Now that the Brisben Fire Department has been disbanded, its calls will be absorbed by other fire departments, such as Oxford, Greene, and Smithville. These departments will manage the Brisben Fire District homes within their respective towns, but the response time is expected to increase from a couple of minutes to seven to ten minutes.
On Saturday, December 9 at 11:00 a.m., the Brisben Fire Department is offering their station, trucks, and equipment to the highest bidders. The auction will include the real estate of the Brisben Fire Department, located at 2716 Rt. 12.
