Anthony Brindisi made a surprising choice when he voted against Nancy Pelosi to be the next House speaker.

Brindisi, who was sworn in Thursday to represent New York's 22nd Congressional District, voted for former Vice President Joe Biden for the leadership post.

Brindisi, an Oneida County Democrat, had promised during his campaign against Republican incumbent Claudia Tenney that he would not support Pelosi for speaker.

Since his narrow victory, Brindisi consistently declined to say who he intended to vote for instead of Pelosi. But in interviews he noted he could vote for someone who isn't a member of the House of Representatives. And that's what he did.

Pelosi wound up receiving enough support from fellow Democrats to serve as speaker.

Brindisi's wife and two children joined him in Washington as he was sworn in as a new member of the House.

The new congressman's Binghamton district office will remain in the same spot as that used during Tenney's two years in Congress. It's on the second floor of the Metro Center at 49 Court Street.

Staffers were busy setting up shop in the downtown office Thursday afternoon and waiting for telephones to be installed.
