The big digout is expected to continue through the weekend after the Twin Tiers was socked with record snowfall from the winter storm named "Gail" by TV forecasters.

Some areas around Broome and Tioga County reported over three and a half feet of snow December 16-17.

Traffic was stranded for hours on Interstate 81 between Castle Creek and Whitney Point with New York State Police checking on motorists using a large all-terrain vehicle and snowmobiles.

Most area school districts continue to be closed December 18 or using remote learning due to storm recovery efforts. Complete closings, in partnership with 12 News WBNG TV are listed on the drop-down window under weather at the top of the page.

Many offices and other facilities are also closed December 18, including the Discovery Center of the Southern Tier. It would be wise to call ahead to see if a government office, business or agency is open.

A State of Emergency remains in Broome County and most areas are discouraging unnecessary travel. Travel bans have been replaced by travel advisories but residents are still encouraged to stay off the roads Broome's 'no unnecessary travel order' continues indefinitely due to hazardous driving conditions..

Motorists in Binghamton and other municipalities are also asked to park off the street in order to allow plows to further remove snow and widen the pathways for vehicles.

If possible, clear snow from fire hydrants.
