Auction Underway for Binghamton Weis Market Equipment
Thousands of items from a recently-closed Weis Markets grocery store in Binghamton are being sold at auction.
Vision Equipment and Auction Company of Georgia is selling the equipment and furnishings from the shuttered Weis store at 307 Conklin Avenue on the city's South Side.
Weis closed the location on March 2 after operating at the site for nearly 15 years. The store opened as a Giant market in 1964.
Broome County's Giant stores were sold to Pennsylvania-based Weis Markets in August 2009. Although the grocery operations were taken over by Weis, the properties continued to be owned by the Akel family's Binghamton Giant Markets.
Philip Akel has declined to comment on possible future uses for the Conklin Avenue site.
In recent days, workers from Vision Equipment were busy inside the closed Weis store preparing for an online auction.
A company representative told WNBF News that virtually everything that remained in the store was to be sold.
The Weis Markets auction is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
