While off-campus Binghamton University students are slowly trickling back into the area in preparation for the start of the fall semester, on-campus move-in starts August 19.

Instead of a big one or two day push to get settled in with a big jump in the amount of traffic on the Vestal Parkway and around local shopping centers the approximately 6,800 students coming back to campus are taking seven days to move into the dorms.

Students are getting rapid nasal swab test for coronavirus and are being sent back home or into a quarantine dorm if they test positive. 

University officials note that even downstate New York areas, where most B.U. students come from, infection rates are coming in at one percent or less. Even so, it is not a zero-chance of infection so testing, sanitation and safety protocols are in place for the start of the school year. 

The campus is working with local government and law enforcement officials to maintain safety off campus as well.

Students are warned they face consequences, including being removed from the university experience if they violate any of the state mandates and guidance for avoiding the spread of COVID-19.
