A man who graduated from Binghamton University last year sustained life-threatening injuries when he was beaten and robbed in Recreation Park on the city's West Side.

Information about the October 14 attack on Kai Liu was not reported by city police. According to the Binghamton University student newspaper Pipe Dream, Liu described the attack on the GoFundMe website.

Liu said he was attacked by two people as he walked in the park between 8:30 and 9 p.m. He said he lost consciousness after his head was smashed on the concrete.

Liu, who came to the United States from China to study, said he underwent surgery at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City after sustaining a skull fracture.

Binghamton University president Harvey Stenger on Friday said the investigation into the assault was handled by city police. He said he did not know whether any arrests have been made.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Stenger said "we don't have any official information about the attack" beyond what Liu has described. He said he made a contribution to the GoFundMe campaign.

A professor who spoke with Liu on Wednesday said he's "doing much better" and is continuing to recuperate.

Binghamton police detective Captain Cory Minor said two juveniles have been charged in the case. Their names will not be released because of their age.
