State Approves Binghamton Tiny Homes for Veterans
A project to develop several new residential units for veterans in Binghamton has been authorized to move forward by New York state.
Ten "tiny homes" are planned for the city's North Side where a veterans resource center is being built.
Five single-unit residences and five double-unit homes will be located near a building that will house programs to assist Broome County veterans.
The $12.2 million project is being built at 530 State Street, east of the Binghamton Plaza property.
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said the state "has been really gracious" by providing a couple of large grants to support the initiative.
The county has retained Soldier On, a Massachusetts-based organization, to provide property and case management services for the facility.
Garnar said Soldier On has "a lot of experience in working with veterans" overseeing housing programs for them.
The modular tiny homes are expected to be delivered to the site soon. Meanwhile, work continues on the main building for the veterans resource center.
The roof is scheduled to be installed next week. Plumbing, heating and electrical systems are being put into the structure.
The tiny home portion of the project is to be completed by next July. There will be income and other guidelines for veterans who will be offered one of the residential units.
