Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski released a statement on the investigation Wednesday afternoon.

Lineva's mother has told reporters she believes her daughter's death was a homicide.

In the statement, Zikuski said two medical exams by certified forensic pathologists concluded the 20-year-old woman's injuries were "consistent as being struck by a vehicle"

The chief said eyewitness accounts placed "Lineva, walking alone, in the area near the accident location near the time it occurred."

City police responded to Route 434 near the Pennsylvania Avenue exit around 2:05 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of someone lying in the roadway.

Officers found Lineva lying in the eastbound lane against a concrete divider. She was pronounced dead a short time later at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

In Wednesday's statement, Zikuski said surveillance video showed Lineva "walking alone, in the area near the accident location" at about the time it happened.

The chief said information gathered through the investigation also has pointed to a hit-and-run scenario.

Zikuski said the police department is "working every lead and putting every investigative resource" in an effort to determine what happened. City police are being assisted by Binghamton University Police.

The chief asked anyone who may have information to contact the Detective Bureau at 607.772.7080.

Zikuski and police investigators have not been available to answer questions about Lineva's death.
