Protesters Gather Near Binghamton City Council President’s Home

Authorities say dozens of protesters showed up outside the residence of Binghamton City Council president Sophia Resciniti after a police reform public hearing was abruptly ended.

Several police officers were sent to Leroy Street and Crestmont Road around 8:30 p.m. Monday after callers reported a crowd had gathered.

The protesters were gone by the time police arrived. Witnesses told officers two to three dozen people had assembled outside Resciniti's home.

Police were told some in the group had called for Resciniti to come outside, while shouting insults and "expletives."

Earlier in the evening, officers monitored a protest outside a Broome County office building on Hawley Street. Police say some of those involved in that gathering moved to the second-floor entance to City Hall and knocked on windows before they were dispersed by officers.

Resciniti had been conducting a virtual public hearing on Binghamton's police reform proposal. She concluded the event because of the conduct of some participants on the call.

Police say officers escorted Resciniti to her vehicle "as a safety precaution."

Late Monday night, police were notified of a "threatening social media post made regarding members of Binghamton City Council."
