It’s Like Legos: Final Pieces Installed for New Binghamton Garage

Construction crews are finishing the first major phase of the $25 million parking facility being built next to downtown Binghamton's Boscov's department store.

In less than six weeks, the exterior of the five-story structure has taken shape as large precast concrete segments have been carefully put into place.

Mayor Jared Kraham said 508 pieces are being installed for the project. The individual segments have been trucked to Binghamton from western Massachusetts.

The mayor said they're "being assembled literally like Legos." He said some of the pieces weigh as much as 60,000 pounds.

Kraham said the progress that was made with the installation of posts and columns of the future 500-space parking garage over the first 24 hours was "amazing."

The mayor expressed fascination at the process, which has attracted onlookers of all ages since it started on May 2.

In recent days, flatbed tractor-trailers have been lining up side-by-side on Water Street as the sections of concrete were delivered to the construction site.

Once the basic structure has been built, the project will be turned over to the general contractor and the companies that will be doing some specialized work to complete the garage.

Electrical and plumbing work will be done over the summer, along with the installation of the elevator for the parking facility.

Kraham expects a portion of the new garage can go into operation before the holiday shopping season.
