Binghamton Man's New Weapon Plea

A Binghamton man, convicted in a shooting 6 years ago, admits he had a loaded and unlicensed handgun two months ago.

The Broome County District Attorney’s office says 31-year-old Vernon Riddick has pleaded guilty to felony Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

Authorities say, after failing to stop July 24th for police, who said they had seen Riddick driving erratically, the former Endicott resident ditched the vehicle and fled on foot.

Police gave chase and say they found a loaded .40 caliber Glock handgun tossed in a garbage can along the way.

The D.A.’s office says Riddick will be sentenced to five years in New York State Prison followed by five years post-release supervision when he returns to court in December.

A check of past news reports involving Vernon I. Riddick shows the man was arrested during a traffic stop in Binghamton in September, 2016 and the then-25-year-old Endicott resident was charged with felony attempted second degree murder and misdemeanor criminal impersonation.

The account in the September 29, 2016 Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin says Riddick was taken into custody at Clinton Street and Starr Avenue where he gave officers a fake name.

Police had apparently been looking for Riddick in connection with a September 6, 2016 incident near 88 Liberty Street.

In that incident, a man had been shot in the leg and suffered “a non-life-threatening wound.”

That shooting had reported been the result of an ongoing street dispute between Riddick and the victim.

The news release September 19, 2022 reports Riddick was convicted in 2017 of felony assault.
