Binghamton Man Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in West Side Crash
The driver of a car involved in a deadly collision on the West Side of Binghamton has pleaded guilty to a manslaughter count.
According to the Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elijah Burnside of Binghamton entered the plea in Broome County Court on Monday. He is scheduled to be sentenced January 25.
Burnside was operating a 2016 Honda Civic that sped through a stop sign, slamming into a 2015 BMW. The driver of the BMW - 70-year-old Ronald Phetphongsy of Binghamton - was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the crash.
The collision occurred at Leroy and Chapin streets around 2:40 p.m. on November 21, 2019.
Investigators said Burnside was traveling south on Chapin Street at a high rate of speed just before the crash. The vehicle was estimated to have been moving at over 60 mph in a 30 mph zone.
Four people in the vehicle driven by Burnside were injured in the wreck.
A prosecutor said the recently-retired Phetphongsy had been on his way to pick up a grandson at school when the collision occurred.
