Binghamton Killer Back in Maximum-Security Prison

James Wales Sr., the man who killed a 12-year-old Binghamton girl, has been returned to a maximum-security prison.

Wales was sentenced to 33-and-a-third years to life in prison for first-degree rape and second-degree murder in connection with the 1984 attack on Cheri Ann Lindsey.

Wales last year was moved from the maximum-security Auburn Correctional Facility to the medium-security Cayuga Correctional Facility in Moravia.

David Lindsey, Cheri Ann's father, was angered when he learned Wales was no longer being held in a maximum-security prison.

In a WNBF Radio interview last November, Lindsey said he understood inmates were moved to medium-security facilities before they become eligible for parole.

Lindsey went public with his concerns and his hope that Wales would be returned to a maximum-security prison. Those who supported his call signed petitions and sent messages to the state corrections commissioner.

Lindsey said he received a letter from state Senator Thomas Libous a few weeks ago indicating corrections officials had decided they would not move Wales out of the medium-security facility.

Lindsey said that prompted him to send a strongly-worded email to acting commissioner Anthony Annucci restating his call for Wales to be placed back in a maximum-security prison.

On Friday afternoon, Lindsey said, he was informed that Wales had been moved to the Elmira Correctional Facility, a maximum-security site.

Lindsey said he is thankful for everyone who supported his effort. He noted a parole hearing for Wales could be held in March 2017.
