What was announced as a five-day closure of a heavily-traveled route into downtown Binghamton has been extended for weeks as a construction project continues.

Front Street between Clinton and Gaines streets has been out of service for through traffic since March 30.

Vacri Construction Corporation is doing work on renovations to the McDonald Avenue pump station and a storm sewer replacement project.

The Front Street detour initially was scheduled to run through April 3. But Vacri issued a notice that the closure would run for one more week "due to unforeseen circumstances."

The company and city officials have not explained why the Front Street Gateway has been shut down for much longer than expected. The street normally is used by thousands of vehicles a day.

A worker at the site today said he had "no idea" when the street would reopen to traffic.

The detour has created confusion for many people attempting to reach the Broome County Health Department building on Front Street.

Limited local traffic has been permitted to allow access to the health department and Lourdes offices.
