Big Binghamton Airport Transformation Project Continues
A $54 million modernization project is moving forward at the Greater Binghamton Airport.
Dozens of workers with various contractors are busy every day at the town of Maine facility.
Broome County aviation commissioner Mark Heefner said construction at the airport started in September of last year.
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Heefner said 65 to 85 people are working on the project each day.
One of the most impressive elements of the transformation will be the airport's new departure lounge.
The commissioner said the roof and the glass are all set in place as interior work continues in the future lounge.
The makeover job incorporates new elements with some of the existing construction at the airport.
Heefner said there's a 24-inch difference in floor heights between some old and new sections of the facility. He said there have been no major structural issues with the project.
Heefner said "we found a couple of structural things" that needed to be addressed but "nothing insane." He said the contractors and architects on the project are "all doing a good job working together to find solutions" to move the job forward.
New jet bridges have been delivered to the site and are expected to be tied into the building within a few weeks.
The commissioner said the departure lounge is expected to be completed in January. The full airport project "is on track for a full opening" next spring.
