The B.C. Humane Society has some fun and creative fund raising events planned throughout the year to help the shelter care for dozens of animals.

Speaking on the May 17 edition of the weekly local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up, Donation Coordinator, Kim Broderick provides details of the 2nd annual 5K Wag, Walk & Run taking place Saturday, June 7 at Otsiningo Park.  People and their pooches can walk and wag but dogs are not allowed to enter the run portion of the race for safety reasons.

Broderick also discusses the continuing problem with cat over-population, which is at a peak now as this is the time of year when many kittens are born.

The importance of responsible pet ownership is also highlighted that includes providing proper veterinary care for companion animals and carefully considering their needs and a family's lifestyle before committing to adding a pet to a household.

Information about the B.C. Humane Society and well as online registration for the 5K Wag, Walk & Run can be found at www.bchumanesoc.com or by calling (607) 724-3709.

Southern Tier Close Up airs Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
