Investigators say 62-year-old Gary Perine of Sanford has been charged with third-degree arson for allegedly setting a fire at his home.

According to New York State Police, Perine was arrested on Thursday.

The blaze at 28 Kenyon Hill Road in the town of Sanford was reported around 1:35 p.m. on August 25. It was spotted by an off-duty 911 center communications supervisor.

The fire gutted two bedrooms and half of the structure's roof.

Investigators determined it had been set in a pile of clothes on a bed.

Perine, who lived in the home by himself, was arraigned in Sanford town court and sent to Broome County Jail without bail.

State police were assisted by Broome County fire investigators, Endicott police and the Binghamton University police.
