More student housing may be constructed at University Plaza in the town of Vestal.

Several hundred additional Binghamton University students could reside at the former shopping center site.

Vestal-based Newman Development Group wants to start building The Metroplex at UP in the summer of next year.

The first of about 500 students could move into the complex in time for the fall 2015 semester.

Newman Development managing member Marc Newman told WNBF News the project cost could be in "the $10 million dollar range."

Newman said the new housing would be constructed on the south side of the plaza property, which is located east of Plaza Drive.

The new project will be separate from the existing University Plaza Apartments, which are managed by Ambling Development Company in a partnership with Newman Development.

Newman said Ambling won't be involved in the proposed new housing project.
