The list of closed Subway restaurants in the Binghamton area continues to grow longer.

Some Endicott sandwich lovers are lamenting the loss of the Subway shop at 61 Washington Avenue.

Efforts to contact the business owner were unsuccessful. Endicott Mayor Linda Jackson said she was aware of the restaurant's closure but didn't know the circumstances.

Operators of nearby businesses on The Avenue said they viewed the Subway shutdown as something of a mystery. Some said the place had suspended operations for a time with a sign advising that the place was closed for renovations.

A sign now in the entrance of the restaurant at the corner of Washington Avenue and Monroe Street simply indicates the business is "CLOSED" with no explanation.

The Subway shop had operated at the downtown Endicott location for about 44 years.

A Subway restaurant at 35 Court Street in Binghamton is expected to shut its doors next week. That location has been a fixture for downtown workers and shoppers for the past three decades.

In recent years, Subway shops in Vestal, Johnson City and Newark Valley have closed without explanation.

More than 1,000 Subway units in the United States have been shuttered since 2018. It's not known whether additional locations in Broome and Tioga counties plan to close.
