Abandoned Johnson City Apartment Building Torn Down

Demolition crews have moved in to tear down a longstanding eyesore on Main Street in Johnson City.

The three-story six-unit apartment house at 219 Main Street has been unoccupied for several years.

Mayor Greg Deemie and other village officials were at the site Wednesday morning as workers from LCP Group of Vestal began to remove the abandoned structure.

Deemie said he made removal of the building one of his top priorities when he became mayor.

The village received state funding to help pay for the demolition work.

The mayor said a concrete pad will be installed at the site in the weeks ahead to clear the way for a BC Transit bus shelter.

The rest of the property will be turned into a green space for use as a "pocket park."
